My ride today went well - I felt pretty good actually and managed to maintain a fair speed for little exertion. Got home and it was a quick change and out to watch Ice Age 3 with the kids. On returning, I noticed my head was feeling a little fuzzy; like a very soft clamp was on it. I text Joe and said that rather than get up at the crack of dawn, drive 90 minutes up the M6 and then do a 4+ hour sportive, I would rather get a bit of extra sleep, and do a 2 hour local ride. I asked him if he thought it was sensible or just bottling out and he said it made perfect sense. So, that's what I'm doing - 2 hour ride, probably up brickworks and back.
I read some advice to cyclists (perhaps from another famous cyclist) to sit rather than stand and lie rather than sit: I'm trying to follow this advice wherever possible. The house is a disaster zone and I have a huge pile of ironing to do but I'm going to try to put it off until I feel I've recovered a bit more.
My riding routine for the coming week will be different to usual due to my youngest having chicken pox and being unable to attend nursery. I'm glad this is all happening with a couple of weeks to spare but it's not ideal is it?

My 4 year old, Yvette, had chicken pox 2 weeks ago. It was a long week being in isolation. We went to the shops once and people were giving is a very wide berth. She did look terrible to be fair.
Good luck with your ride today.
Hey Karen,
Just thought I'd say hello, 'cos I've been following your blog for a while now. I'm doing the Etape too and have been very impressed by what you've been doing.
Hope your ride went well today - I'm sure you made exactly the right decision about the 3 counties...none of us are going to get any fitter now by doing an extra long ride, and it's obviously more important that you're fighting fit for the big day.
Take care, and maybe bump into you in France!
Shirish
Hi Simon - did you feel a bit rough when Yvette had spots? I'm wondering if our bodies still have to fight the virus in some way, even if we have immunity to it.
Hi Shirish - thanks for reading the blog and for your lovely comments. I agree, I think it was the right decision not to do 3 counties today. I felt really good on my ride today but was tired this afternoon and fell asleep on the sofa.
Good luck to you & yes, maybe we'll bump into each other in France :-) what's your number?
Hi Karen,
That's great that you felt good on the ride, cos I guess that's your best measure of how you're going.
I wouldn't worry about the falling asleep on the sofa - I've been doing that all week! I've been putting it down to the heat...
The number thing's a bit up in the air at the moment.
I work at Sky News, and Sky's sending a team as part of it's commitment to cycling.
They've promised us 'good' numbers, but at the moment on the website we've got 'provisional' ones...so I'm 9453 or something...ulp! I'm a little bit worried that'll turn out to be my real number, but if so, will just have to start fast!
Shirish - someone on the bikeradar forum posted that Dermot Murnaghan (sp?) was doing the Etape - is he part of your team then? Do they give you some nice Sky Team kit?
Excellent that they are promoting cycling in that way - I hope that they do a nice feature on it on the telly too.
Yes, let's hope they sort out that crappy number for you :-(
Yes, that's right, Dermot is doing it too. There're about 25 of us in total, from right across Sky.
We do get a bit of kit - I saw the design for the jerseys last week - I think it's a kinda dark blue, with the route profile winding round the bottom half. It'll definitely be very recognisable anyway.
They've always been fairly positive towards cycling, and obviously since the launch of the pro-team and stuff it has ratcheted up a lot.
We've had lots of really great help so I feel very privileged, and even more determined not to mess it up!
